The Graduate Certificate in Public Policy (15 credits) equips students and professionals with the analytical, strategic, and communication skills needed to understand and influence public decision-making. Designed for those committed to improving communities and governance, the program provides practical tools, policy frameworks, and evaluative methods to navigate complex social, economic, and political challenges.

Drawing students from disciplines such as urban and regional planning, sociology, economics, and political science, the certificate fosters collaboration across fields and perspectives—all united by the goal of creating informed, effective public policy.

This certificate also serves as an exceptional complement to many Master’s and PhD programs, providing a solid foundation in analysis, leadership, and policy implementation that enhances both academic study and professional advancement.

Program Requirements

In addition to the requirements listed below, students must understand and meet all Graduate Division requirements.

Core Coursework (9 credits)

  • PLAN 600: Public Policy and Public Planning (3)
    Explores the evolution of planning in public policy, focusing on social, spatial, and ethical dimensions of decision-making.
  • PUBA 609: Policy Analysis and Implementation (3)
    Examines policy design and evaluation, emphasizing analytical methods and the influence of social, political, and economic factors.
  • Plus one methods course (3)
    PLAN 604, PLAN/PACE 629, PLAN 653, PUBA 601, PUBA 607, SOC 605/605L, SOC 606, or SOC 609

Elective Coursework (6 credit)

  • Two policy-related courses (taken in consultation with the GCERT advisor)
    ECON 606, ECON 607, ECON 611, ECON/SUST 636, ECON 650, ECON 674, POLS 660, POLS 673, POLS 770, PLAN 615, PLAN 620, PLAN 630, PLAN 648, PUBA 621, PUBA 625, PUBA 629, PUBA 667, or SOC 615

Additional Notes

  • Prerequisites remain in effect for applicable courses.
  • Up to 9 credits earned in the PUBA GCERT in Public Policy may be applied toward the PUBA MPA or another graduate degree (with restrictions).
  • GCERT students wishing to enter the PUBA MPA program must apply and be formally accepted.
  • We offer a variety of funding opportunities to current students.
