Why did you choose PUBA?
After my undergraduate studies, I wanted to deepen my understanding of the resources needed to change systems that perpetuate inequality and injustice through policy development and advocacy. After meeting with program staff, I realized that I would be able to learn from professors and peers with invaluable experiences and diverse world perspectives. I chose PUBA because it aligned with my passion for making my community a better place and the opportunity to further develop my competencies as a professional.
What is your favorite experience so far?
My favorite experience has been the unique opportunity to join Dr. Yu’s research project in the Summer of 2021. I collaborated with Dr. Yu and three other peers to conduct a content analysis of the eight Harry Potter films. Because we were each assigned a section of the article to be published, it challenged my skills as a writer to articulate the importance of connecting leadership theory to practical events that leaders in the public sector must be aware of, given today’s climate of social and political unrest.

What advice would you give prospective MPA students?
My advice to prospective MPA students is to 1) be flexible and 2) go for it! If you’re interested in a particular field within the public or nonprofit sector, this is your chance to immerse yourself in that environment. There are many opportunities to connect the work you do in class to the real world, especially through the practicum experience.
How will the MPA help you with your career goals?
I’ve learned so much over the last two years as a MPA student! It’s allowed me to expand career opportunities within the public and nonprofit sector and gain valuable skills necessary in a post-pandemic world. The program’s collaborative nature allowed me to join a network of peers who are also dedicated to making our communities a better place.
